Together We Build Our Future

Across Ohio, communities are demanding more than promises — they want policies that work, leaders who listen, and a government that shows up when it counts. James Carter's approach to community development starts with one fundamental belief: that lasting change is built from the ground up, not handed down from the top.

The result is a comprehensive community development agenda — one that ties housing, education, workforce training, and public infrastructure together into a single, coherent vision for an Ohio that works for everyone.

Listening To The Community

Our listening tour took James Carter to 88 Ohio counties — from Appalachian communities in the southeast to manufacturing towns along Lake Erie. In each place, the concerns were deeply local but the themes were remarkably consistent: people want safe neighborhoods, schools that work, jobs that pay a living wage, and healthcare they can actually afford.

These conversations weren't just informational — they were transformative. Carter's housing affordability plan, for example, was shaped almost entirely by what renters in Columbus, Cleveland, and Dayton told our team about the crisis they're living through every month.

More than 12,000 Ohioans participated in listening sessions, filled out community surveys, or met one-on-one with campaign staff. Their input directly shaped eight of the fifteen major policy proposals in our platform — a level of civic co-creation that is virtually unprecedented in statewide campaigns.
